Osteopathy is a method of treatment based on the mechanical impact of hands on the structure and organs of the human body. An osteopath is a licensed doctor who performs hands-on treatment to eliminate not only the diseases, but also the etiological causes of them. Osteopathic treatment results general body improvement, recovery from injuries and health issues especially in the spine, joints, muscles, nerves and internal organs. Additionally, osteopathic treatment significantly increases strength and flexibility by improving muscle tone, bone density, joint mobility and overall balance and homeostasis.
DOs hands are an universal diagnostic tool allowing us to determine even minor deviations in the tissues of the body. Such details may not bother the patient at all and are not normally detected during routine examinations. However, for an accurate diagnosis, modern medical imaging techniques are used e.g. X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, CT in addition to clinical laboratory diagnostics.
During the osteopathic treatment session, the DO switches on natural body mechanisms to restore damage by improving organs mobility and tissue blood flow at varying levels. This process initiates slowly, gradually or rapidly, depending on each patient. Sometimes, the patient may experience tingling, throbbing, bruising sensation or even acute pain. In general, these side effects may develop a few hours after the treatment session and can last from one to three days. In case of acute pain, over-the-counter or prescription pain management medications can be used to relieve the pain.
On the other hand, some patients may experience pain or discomfort due to other reasons. Despite the fact that DOs use gentle hand touches, significant biological and physiological changes happen to the patient’s body e.g. spine curvature, muscle distribution, and joint trajectories. As a result, some tissues and organs that have been adapted to unhealthy conditions for many years cannot immediately reverse to their natural structure and function. In this case, and if the pain or discomfort persists for more than three days, the patient needs to inform and than visit his DO without delay to help relieve the pain and speed up recovery.
In fact, both outcomes should be expected as a result of osteopathic therapy, which requires the patient’s understanding and preparedness.
DOs do not replace damaged tissues and organs with new ones, but only activate the tremendous self-healing capacity of your body.
Based on this, after the session it is recommended to do the following:
Proper organization of the workplace and recreation areas contribute to deeper relaxation of muscles, improvement of body balance and effective recovery of the body while doing what you love to do. Ergonomics helps to consolidate and to prolong the effect of osteopathic treatment.
The main course takes from 1-2 treatment sessions (for mild cases in children) to 6-10 sessions for children or adults with complex and serious medical conditions.
In acute cases every 3-7 days, in sub-acute cases every 2 weeks, and about once a month for planned treatment.
It is recommended to consult with your DO on a scheduled basis without waiting for acute symptoms. This allows you to reduce the number of procedures, maintain/improve quality of life and achieve a more complete recovery.
